Programme note for Fantasie

‘My Fantasie for cello and piano was commissioned by Convivium Music for Paul and Huw Watkins. The title was used by Schubert and Schumann for extended compositions as an alternative to the more limiting sonata. My composition consists of two movements: the first fairly slow and lyrical in character, the second more closely based on the scherzo principle with several trios. A characteristic of my composition is the more than customary use of pizzicato: both movements begin with the use of plucked sounds. The piece ends as it began.’ Alexander Goehr
