The opening event of the weekend introduces us to Maud, perhaps the most easily recognised of all Tennyson’s characters. Who was she, what is significant about these poems and what is their place in Tennyson’s output? An introductory talk is followed by the Somervell settings rarely heard in recital today.

Event 4 The High Hall Garden

Two miles from Somersby, the birthplace of Alfred Tennyson, lies Harrington Hall, the home of Rosa Baring. The poem Maud is said to have been inspired by the gardens as well as by Rosa herself. The area covers 6 acres with walled gardens, organic kitchen garden, lawns, a pond and herbaceous borders. We are grateful to Mr and Mrs Price who have kindly agreed to open the garden for the afternoon especially for the Festival.
